Hi, I’m Deano, and I’m excited to welcome you to Outlive Personal Training!

As a certified personal trainer I specialise in using a hybrid of in-person and online coaching to help you achieve your health and fitness goals, whether that’s to lose fat, gain muscle or achieve a bucket list item like running a marathon.
My Personal Training Journey
My love for fitness and martial arts started at an early age, but was totally derailed when I started my teaching career and had my two children. After signing up for my first marathon aged 36 (I’ll keep my marathon time to myself), I dropped my excess weight and eventually got back into martial arts as well.
After training myself for various events –
- Marathons x5
- Triathlons x3
- Three peaks 24 hour mountain hiking x2
- 5km swim
- 100km bike ride
- Ultramarathon relay / Spitfire Scramble x3
- Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitions x6
I promised myself not to let my fitness level drop so low again and after helping others to get fitter, stronger and leaner, I decided to gain my personal training qualification. It’s all well and good being passionate about fitness and coaching others, but I wanted to make sure that I was offering them the safest and most accurate guidance possible .
My Training Philosophy
I believe that fitness should be about consistency over intensity; progress over perfection; and fundamentals over fads. My approach to training focuses on using tried and tested methods, implemented over time, to produce lasting results with the minimum risk of overtraining or injury.
I believe that changing your daily habits – your thoughts, words and actions – all contributes towards you achieving the results you desire. For this reason I take a holistic approach to coaching, rather than just handing you a training or nutrition plan.
Finally, I believe that given a strong enough “WHY?” you can accomplish almost anything! So if you’re struggling to find a big enough WHY, or reason to achieve your goal, I can help you with that too.
What Makes Me Unique?
As I am resisting the move to automation, upscaling, bots, AI, etc and only want to work with a handful of dedicated clients at a time, this means you will be getting a very personalised human touch to your training.
Even when using the Fitness App, expect regular check ins from me and requests for updates on your progress. As my client you will receive a plan tailored to your unique needs and goals, which I will carefully adjust throughout your programme.
What also sets me apart from other coaches, despite being relatively new to personal training, is my background in psychology (BSc, MA) and having been an educator for the last 20 years. I have worked with such a wide range of people over the years that I understand how unique an individual’s motivations can be. I also understand the power that making small changes, and developing automatic habits, can have over your long-term health and fitness.
The Sad Facts (do any of these apply to you?)
Sadly, too many people fail to prioritise their health until it’s too late. They procrastinate on finding a mode of exercise that works for them and even if they manage to maintain a healthy weight, far too many people go to their graves never having explored their full physical potential.
For some people, taking the time to exercise – let alone hiring a personal trainer – is seen as a luxury. For me personally, I think about exercise in the same way as I think about putting money away in savings, investments or a pension. I’m 100% going to do it, because I don’t want to struggle (as much) when I’m older – so I might as well seek advice on how to get the most out of my daily “investment”.
A slight improvement, but still unfortunate, are those who see exercise is a means to an end. They’ll run that one half marathon, resenting every minute of the training, never to run again. This is a shame…but it’s also less likely, if the training process is handled skilfully.
Some people are motivated to get that beach body for the summer (vanity is a great motivator, so I’m not knocking it!), only to pile on the pounds again the minute the suitcases are unpacked – making it harder to repeat the following year, according to the science. Again, this is a shame, and despite being commonplace, doesn’t need to be inevitable.
My Mission and Goals
My mission is simple: to help you achieve your health and fitness goals and become your best self – however you define that.
Train with me and together we will find a sustainable programme to minimise those weight fluctuations, or constant stop-starts in your training progress. Train with me and you will also develop the mindset necessary to see your goal through to completion (and beyond).
So what’s your goal?
- Lose weight (reach a healthy BMI)
- Lose fat and look better (e.g. lose the dad bod) – a kilo /week is not uncommon
- Gain muscle mass or strength
- Improve your cardio and feel fitter
- Lower your resting heart rate / improve your VO2max
- Get into the habit of exercising regularly
- Complete an event e.g. triathlon, marathon, etc
I’m committed to helping you set SMART goals and creating a training and nutrition plan that will help you get there!
